How many Buthus species are there in Europe and how did they evolve?

 


As mentioned in  previous post, the number of Buthus Leach, 1815 (Buthidae) species in Europe grew from one single species to more than 20. Earlier this year, this number was reduced to nine valid species. This decision was based on  rigorous phylogenetic analyses combining morphology, nuclear and mitochondrial DNA sequences, morphometric analyses, and ecological data.

In a new study, which was supposed to be published before the article mentioned above, Javier Blasco-Aróstegui and co-workers looks more deeply into the DNA og genetics of the Iberian Buthus species. This is complex stuff, way beyond my knowledge. I have therefor asked co-author Yuri simon to explain this article for us in more laymen terms:

 In this study, the authors re-examined the number of species within the European Buthus scorpions. Over the years, the group experienced a rapid increase in the number of described species, mostly because they show a great morphological diversity. 

However, this high morphological diversity is not always reflected in their DNA. The fast-changing mitochondrial DNA (inherited only from the mother) often suggests many species, while the more slowly evolving nuclear DNA (inherited from both parents) tells a different story. When these two genetic signals disagree, a situation known as mito-nuclear discordance, making difficult to define clear species boundaries. Moreover, since the past climate changes and the region’s complex landscape repeatedly separated and later reconnected populations, these scorpions sometimes met again after long periods apart and interbred creating in some cases hybrid populations showing some morphological intermediate characters which has contributed to the large number of taxa described. 

By combining genetic evidence with morphology and species distribution modelling, we found that the evolutionary history of Buthus in Iberia is far more complex than a simple “split and diverge” story. It involves repeated cycles of isolation, reconnection, and hybridization. Our results show that no single source of data—neither morphology nor mitochondrial or nuclear DNA alone—is sufficient to accurately define these species. Instead, an integrative approach is necessary. Using this approach, we concluded that the number of valid European Buthus species is likely much lower than previously thought, reducing it from around 20 to roughly half.

Abstract:
Mito-nuclear (or cytonuclear) discordance, evolutionary incongruence between the mitochondrial and nuclear genomes, is a widespread but underappreciated phenomenon that may obscure signals of introgression and hybridization important for understanding evolutionary trajectories and species boundaries. The present study explored the roles of secondary contact and introgressive hybridization in the diversification of Buthus Leach, 1815 scorpions in the Iberian Peninsula, a hotspot for mito-nuclear discordance, in which complex topography and glacial history facilitated repeated cycles of isolation and secondary contact. Patterns of mito-nuclear discordance were predicted to be consistent with overlapping distributions, similar ecological niches, and intermediate phenotypes. By integrating genomic, morphological, and ecological data, the intricate evolutionary history of Buthus, shaped by vicariance, reticulation and ecological opportunity, was revealed. The results underscore the role of introgressive hybridization in shaping patterns of biodiversity and the need to consider mito-nuclear discordance in species delimitation.

A systematic revision of the European Buthus species with 10 synonymizations

 


As readers of this blog will know, there have been major increase of Buthus Leach, 1815 (Buthidae) species in Europe in the last two decades. Initially, the only species known from the Iberian Peninsula was Buthus occitanus (Amoreux, 1789). But this species complex was split into several new species, and in 2025 the number had reached almost 20.

Recently, Javier Blasco-Aróstegui and co-workers published a major systematic revision based on samples collected across the known distribution, rigorous phylogenetic analyses combining morphology, nuclear and mitochondrial DNA sequences, morphometric analyses, and ecological data. Their analysis has concluded with the synonymization of 10 species from the Iberian Peninsula. 

Buthus gonzalezdelavegai González-Moliné and Armas, 2024 is synonymzed with Buthus delafuentei Teruel and Turiel, 2020.

Buthus (Androctonus) ajax C.L. Koch, 1839 is synonymized with Buthus halius (C.L. Koch, 1839).

Buthus gabani Ythier, 2021 is synonymized with Buthus halius (C.L. Koch, 1839).

Buthus castellano Teruel and Turiel, 2022 is synonymized with Buthus halius (C.L. Koch, 1839).

Buthus baeticus Teruel and Turiel, 2020 is synonymized with Buthus ibericus Lourenço and Vachon, 2004.

Buthus alacanti Teruel and Turiel, 2020 is synonymized with Buthus manchego Teruel and Turiel, 2020.

Buthus serrano Teruel and Turiel, 2020 is synonymized with Buthus manchego Teruel and Turiel, 2020.

Buthus pedrosousai Teruel and Turiel, 2021 is synonymized with Buthus manchego Teruel and Turiel, 2020.

 Buthus pyrenaeus Ythier, 2021 is synonymized with Buthus occitanus (Amoreux, 1789).

Buthus balmensis Ythier and Laborieux, 2022 is synonymized with Buthus occitanus (Amoreux, 1789).

The remaining nine valid species from the Iberian Peninsula are redescribed and data on distribution and habitats are given. A identification guide for the nine species is also available.

Abstract:
The Palearctic buthid scorpion genus Buthus Leach, 1815, distributed from southwestern Europe (southern France and the Iberian Peninsula) across Africa north of the Sahara, to the Levant and the Arabian Peninsula, has undergone extensive taxonomic revision in the past two decades. Despite these efforts, its taxonomic composition remains confused, perhaps nowhere more so than in the Iberian Peninsula, where 20 putative species were recognized in the past two decades. Molecular phylogenetic studies of Buthus in northwestern Africa and southwestern Europe, based on a few, mostly mitochondrial gene loci, recovered a monophyletic origin for the European clade of Buthus and suggested the existence of several distinct lineages on the Iberian Peninsula. However, relationships with the species of Buthus from the North African Maghreb remained ambiguous. Morphological descriptions of new or revalidated species of Buthus, based in part on the molecular phylogenies but lacking robust diagnoses, and making little attempt to consider geographical variation, compounded the confusion. The present contribution provides a comprehensive, integrative revision of the European species of Buthus based on samples, including topotypes, collected across the known distribution, rigorous phylogenetic analyses combining morphology, nuclear and mitochondrial DNA sequences, morphometric analyses, and ecological data. Nine valid species of Buthus are recognized across France, Portugal, and Spain, and 10 new synonyms presented: Buthus delafuentei Teruel and Turiel, 2020 = Buthus gonzalezdelavegai González-Moliné and Armas, 2024, syn. n.; Buthus elongatus Rossi, 2021; Buthus garcialorcai Teruel and Turiel, 2020; Buthus halius (C.L. An overview of the scorpion fauna of the Iberian Peninsula

The scorpion fauna in the Iberian Peninsula has grown from a few species to more than 20 in the last two decades. Gerard Dupre has recently published an overview of the current scorpion fauna from this region in Europe.

A new psammophile species in the genus Buthus from Northern Spain

 


The duo Rolando Teruel and Carlos Turiel are continuing their study of the Buthus Leach, 1815 (Buthidae) population of Western Europe. In a recent article they have described a new psammophile species the pine forests on siliceous sands of the Duero River in Valladolid, in the core of the Submeseta Norte (northern Spain).

Buthus lusitanus Lourenço, 2021 is synonymized with Buthus halius (C. L. Koch, 1838) after examination of new materials from type localitity. 

Finally, a specimen of B. halius in the study was albino. This is the first report of albinism in this genus and possible the first in the family Buthidae.

Abstract:
The present paper represents the fifth contribution of our taxonomic revision of the genus Buthus Leach, 1815 in the Iberian Peninsula. Herein, we describe a new species from the pine forests on siliceous sands of the Duero River in Valladolid, in the core of the Submeseta Norte (northern Spain). This species is remarkable because of its morphology adapted to burrow in sand, and thus it resembles only Buthus delafuentei Teruel & Turiel, 2020, endemic from the same habitat type, but along the Cádiz Gulf and the lower basin of the Guadalquivir River (southwestern Spain). Moreover, we clarify the true taxonomic status of Buthus lusitanus Lourenço, 2021, by proving that it is actually a junior synonym of Buthus halius (C. L. Koch, 1838) and that its original description is wrong, since it is based only on immature specimens. The West European diversity of Buthus stays at 17 species, all of hem local endemics.

A new species of Buthus from Central Spain

 


Happy New Year!

I have received quite a few new articles during the last month, but due to a long and well-deserved holiday I now have a long queue of interesting articles waiting. Please be patient, I will blog about them soon. :)

The Iberian scorpion fauna have exploded in the last year with the description of many new species with limited distribution. Now Rolando Turiel and Carlos Turiel have discovered another one from Serrania de Cuenca in central Spain.

Abstract:
The present paper represents the third contribution to our taxonomic revision to the genus Buthus Leach, 1815 in the Iberian Peninsula. Herein, we describe a new species from the Serrania de Cuenca (central Spain) and present additional locality records to complement to known geographical distribution of a further nine species: Buthus alacanti Teruel & Turiel, 2020, Buthus baeticus Teruel & Turiel, 2020, Buthus delafuentei Teruel & Turiel, 2020, Buthus elongatus Rossi, 2012, Buthus ibericus Lourenco & Vachon, 2004, Buthus manchego Teruel & Turiel, 2020, Buthus montanus Lourenco & Vachon, 2004, Buthus occitanus (Amoreux, 1789) and Buthus serrano Teruel & Turiel, 2020. The West European diversity of Buthus now reaches 15 species, all of them being local endemics.

More news from the Iberian Pennisula

 


We are not quite finished with news from the Iberian Pennisula after my two posts yesterday. In a recent article by Rolando Teruel and Carlos Turiel they have revised the status of two previously synonymized species from Spain and Portugal. They were originally described in the genus Androctonus and later synonymized with Buthus occitanus: Simon, 1879. Both species are restored as valid species.

Abstract:
The present paper is a continuation of our taxonomic revision of the genus Buthus Leach, 1815 in the Iberian Peninsula. In this second contribution we revalidate two old and virtually neglected species: Buthus ajax (C. L. Koch, 1839) and Buthus halius (C. L. Koch, 1839). We redescribe both taxa in detail (with the designation of neotypes to stabilise the nomenclature) and clarify their geographical distribution. The West European diversity of Buthus now reaches 12 species, all of them local endemics.

Yet another Buthus species from Portugal

 


As mentioned in my previous post today, the number of species in the genus Buthus Leach, 1815 (Buthidae) in Southwestern Europe has increased a lot. Wilson Lourenco has also recently published a new species from Portugal.

Abstract:
A new species belonging to the genus Buthus Leach, 1815 (Scorpiones: Buthidae) is described from the region of Manteigas, ‘Parque Natural da Serra da Estrela’ in the Zêzere Valley in the centre of Portugal. Buthus lusitanus sp. n., shows some morphological affinities, coloration in particular, with Buthus occitanus known from South of France and some regions in Spain. The two species probably represent vicariant elements of an older common ancestor, but only a global molecular study of all presumed populations from the Iberian Peninsula will bring a more clear clarification on their status.

A new species of Buthus from Portugal

 


As with Euscorpius in Europe Thorell, 1876 (Euscorpiidae),  the genus Buthus Leach, 1815 (Buthidae) in Southwestern Europe has also turned out to be a species complex with many hidden species. E.g., the number of species in the Iberian Peninsula has increased from one to 14 in the last decade. One of these species is a newly described species from the Algarve region, in the South of Portugal.

A new species of Buthus is described on the basis of one male and one female collected from Cape St. Vincent (Cabo de São Vicente), located in the Algarve region, in the South of Portugal. This new scorpion taxon represents the 3rd known species of the genus Buthus reported from Portugal and the 14th reported from the Iberian Peninsula. In light of recent studies on the genus Buthus in the Iberian Peninsula (Teruel & Turiel, 2020, 2021; Lourenço, 2021) and considering the geographical distribution presented by the new species with respect to the geographically closest species and their respective habitats, previous records of specimens from Algarve originally considered to belong to Buthus ibericus (Lourenço

A review of Iberian scorpions with six new Buthus species from southern Spain

Rolando Teruel and Carlos Turiel have recently publish the first part of their 10 year long study of the Buthus Leach, 1815 populations in Europa (Buthidae). In the current article they describe six new species from southern Spain and they confirm the validity of the four species previously described from the Iberian Peninsula. The distribution of the 10 species are given, with some significant reducations in the distribution of some of the "old" species.

I paid attention to one statement in this article that I think is important to remember for us amaetur taxonomists. Some of the Iberian Buthus species cannot be identified with certainty without having adult specimens of both male and females. For example, the females of the non-related species B. elongatus and B. montanus are almost impossible to separate from each other, while the males are very different. Having a location will of course help us on the way to an identification ,but if you lack this, an identification of a single individual will be very difficult.

The authors will soon publish part two of their study adding more species from western Europe and present an identification key and a picture atlas that will help in identifying all the new species.

Abstract:
The genus Buthus Leach, 1815 is taxonomically revised for the Iberian Peninsula. We examined 291 specimens from 48 localities, including topotypes of the four currently recognised species: Buthus elongatus Rossi, 2012, Buthus ibericus Lourenco & Vachon, 2004, Buthus montanus Lourenco & Vachon, 2004 and Buthus occitanus (Amoreux, 1789). In this first contribution, all of them are confirmed as valid and redescribed in detail and their geographic distribution is clarified. Also, Buthus europaeus tridentatus Franganillo, 1918 is confirmed as a junior synonym of Buthus occitanus and neotypes are designated for both taxa to stabilise the nomeclature. Finally, six new species are described from southern Spain. The Western European diversity of Buthus reaches now 10 species, all of them being endemics and mostly having a limited geographic range.

A review of the taxonomy of the large buthid genus Buthus


The genus Buthus Leach, 1815 is one of the largest genera in the family Buthidae with species in 17 countries in Western Europe, North-, Central-, and Eastern Africa and the Middle East. The taxonomy of this complex genus has been confusing, but in the last 20 years there have been many studies and the number of species in the genus has increased 10-fold. Several of the African species have medical significance.

Pedro Sousa and co-workers have now published a review of the taxonomy of Buthus and present an overview of the history of Buthus taxonomy, an updated species list and distribution of the genus. Two taxa are raised to species status (from subspecies status):

Buthus parroti Vachon, 1949

In addition, Buthus barbouri Werner, 1932  is transferred to the genus Androctonus Ehrenberg, 1828:

Abstract:
Since the publication of the ground-breaking “Catalogue of the scorpions of the world (1758–1998)” (Fet et al. 2000) the number of species in the scorpion genus Buthus Leach, 1815 has increased 10-fold, and this genus is now the fourth largest within the Buthidae, with 52 valid named species. Here we revise and update the available information regarding Buthus. A new combination is proposed: Buthus halius (C. L. Koch, 1839), comb. n. from Portugal and Spain. B. halius is removed from junior synonymy with Buthus occitanus (Amoreux, 1789), and proposed as a senior synonym of B. ibericus Lourenço & Vachon, 2004, syn. n. Moreover, following I.C.Z.N. article 23.9.2 we propose to maintain as valid B. ibericus (nomen protectum) and to consider the disued B. halius as a nomen oblitum. Buthus europaeus tridentatus Franganillo, 1918 is proposed as a junior synonym of B. occitanus (Amoreux, 1789), syn. n. Buthus sabulicola Touloun, 2012 is proposed as a junior synonym of Buthus bonito Lourenço & Geniez, 2005, syn. n. Buthus occitanus tunetanus neeli Gysin, 1969 is proposed as an informal senior synonym of Buthus tassili Lourenço, 2002, informal syn. n. Two taxa are rised to species rank, Buthus nigrovesiculosus Hirst, 1925, stat. n. and Buthus parroti Vachon, 1949, stat. n.. We further confirm the restricted distribution of B. occitanus that is confined to southeastern France and northwestern Iberian Peninsula and does not occur in North Africa. Additionally, Androctonus barbouri (Werner, 1932), comb. n. from the Agadir region of Morocco, is hereby transferred to the genus Androctonus. We summarize and provide a critical appraisal of the diagnostic characters currently in use for the genus. The catalogue section considers the names for species, subspecies and varieties that have been used for Buthus scorpions. Information about types, including collection numbers and localities are included when available. Finally, an annotated listing of synonymies and an updated bibliography are given.

Phylogeography of the highly complex genus Buthus

Phylogenetic relationships of Buthus in a recently published study in African Zoology.
The genus Buthus Leach, 1815 is probably one of the most speciose, widespread and taxonomical complex taxa in the family Buthidae. In recent years, many species have been described, but the taxonomic and phylogenetic status of the genus is far from resolved.

Diana Pedroso and co-workers have now published an extensive phylogeographic analysis of the genus Buthus based on genetic studies. One conclusion of this study is that there is a lack of congruence between morphologically defines species and the genetic lineages identified in this study. This is a major hindrance in the study of the complex Buthus genus.

Abstract:
The distribution of the scorpion genus Buthus Leach, 1815 includes southwestern Europe, North and Central Africa and extends east towards the Arabian Peninsula. Phylogenetic relationships within the genus are complex and remain partially unresolved despite several previous assessments. A set of three mitochondrial markers, 12s, 16s and CO1, revealed the presence of five well-supported clades: three clades endemic to Morocco, one clade distributed across the Maghreb region and southwestern Europe and one endemic to Tunisia and Algeria. Morocco presents high levels of endemism and appears to be the centre of diversity for the genus. Further differentiation was found within the clade distributed in Tunisia and Algeria, with the discovery of new phylogenetic patterns. In addition, a phylogeny combining all published CO1 data for the genus emphasized the ongoing complex situation regarding the genus’ taxonomy. Highly similar sequences were attributed to different species by different authors throughout the tree, and no differentiated monophyletic species could be resolved. This lack of congruence between morphologically defined species and genetic lineages is a major hindrance in the study of the highly complex genus Buthus.
