A new species of Teuthraustes from Brazil

Wilson Lourenco and Eric Ythier have recently described a new species of Teuthraustes Simon, 1878 (Chatcidae) the State of Amazonas, Brazil.

Teuthraustes japura Lourenco & Ythier, 2022

Abstract:
A new species of scorpion, Teuthraustes japura sp. n. (Scorpiones: Chactidae), is described from the State of Amazonas, Brazil. This is the fourth species of the genus to be collected in the lowlands of South America, and the third record of a species of Teuthraustes from the Brazilian Amazonia. The total number of species of Teuthraustes is now raised to 28. The distribution patterns of the genus are commented upon, and its known geographical distribution is also extended.

Three new species of Teuthraustes from Ecuador

Eric Ythier and Wilson Lourenco have recently published an article discussing the geographical distribution of the genus Teuthraustes Simon, 1878 (Chactidae) in Ecuador. Three new species are described.

Teuthraustes giupponii Ythier & Lourenço, 2017

Teuthraustes khodayarii Ythier & Lourenço, 2017

Teuthraustes kuryi Ythier & Lourenço, 2017

Abstract:
Three new species of scorpions belonging to the genus Teuthraustes Simon, 1878 (Scorpiones: Chactidae) are described from the Amazonian and Pacific regions of Ecuador. The new descriptions raise to four the number of Teuthraustes species in Ecuadorian Amazonia and raise to two the number of species described from the Pacific region. The total number of species of Teuthraustes is now 27, including 15 in Ecuador. The geographical distribution of the genus in Ecuador is enlarged and its pattern of distribution in the country is also commented upon.

A new species of Teuthraustes from Peru

Andrea Rossi has described a new species of Teuthraustes Simon, 1878 (Chactidae) from north-west Peru. The new species were described in 2015 and has been included in The Scorpion Files for some time, but hasn't been mentioned in the blog until now because I didn't have access to the article.

 Teuthraustes castiglii Rossi, 2015

Abstract:
The presence of the genus Teuthraustes Simon, 1878 in Peru is discussed and a new species, Teuthraustes castiglii sp. n., is described from the region of Loreto, in north-west Peru. An identification key for the Peruvian species of the genus is given.

Chactas camposi redescribed and transfered to Teuthraustes

Jose Ochoa & Ricardo Pinto da Rocha have rediscovered the type for Chactas camposi Mello-Leiato, 1939 (Chactidae) that where believed to be lost. A redescription of the type revealed that this scorpion should be placed in the genus Teuthraustes Simon, 1878. New status is:

Teuthraustes camposi (Mello-Leiato, 1939)

Abstract:
The true taxonomic status of the chactid scorpion Chactas camposi Mello-Leitão, 1939 from Ecuador is established based in the recently discovered holotype female, until now considered lost, at the Museu Nacional do Rio de Janeiro. In base on the analysis of the external morphology, we transfer this species to the genus Teuthraustes Simon, 1878. A detailed redescription and diagnosis according to modern standards are provided. Teuthraustes camposi comb. n. is closely related with Teuthraustes whymperi (Pocock, 1893) from Ecuadorian provinces Pichincha and Cotopaxi.

Four new species in family Chactidae from Brazilian Amazonia

Wilson Lourenco and co-workers have published four new species in the family Chactidae from the upper Rio Negro in Brazilian Amazonia.

Broteochactas niemeyerae Lourenco, Ponce de Leao Giupponi & Pedroso, 2011
Brotheas caramaschii Lourenco, Ponce de Leao Giupponi & Pedroso, 2011
Chactopsis yanomami Lourenco, Ponce de Leao Giupponi & Pedroso, 2011
Teuthraustes newaribe Lourenco, Ponce de Leao Giupponi & Pedroso, 2011

The genus Chactopsis Kraepelin, 1912 was transfered from Chactidae to Euscorpiidae by Soleglad & Sissom, 2001, but based on the decisions in Lourenco, 2003 and Lourenco, Ponce de Leao Giupponi & Pedroso, 2011 I have moved this genus back to Chactidae in The Scorpion Files. This until a new family revision is published.

Abstract:
Four new species of chactid scorpions belonging to the genera Broteochactas Pocock, 1893, Brotheas C. L. Koch, 1837, Teuthraustes Simon, 1878 and Chactopsis Kraepelin, 1912 are described from a single location in the upper Rio Negro region, Brazilian Amazonia. These descriptions provide further confirmation of the high biodiversity and the important level of endemicity found in the upper Rio Negro and in the Imeri endemic centre.

Review on Teuthraustes and a new species

Lourenco & Duhem have published an discussion on the biogeography of the South American genus Teuthraustes Simon, 1878 (Chactidae). In addition, a new species is described from Brazil:

Teuthraustes braziliensis Lourenco & Duhem, 2010

Abstract:
A new species of scorpion, Teuthraustes braziliensis sp. n. (Scorpiones, Chactidae), is described from the State of Amazonas, Brazil. This is the second species of the genus to be collected in the lowlands of SouthAmerica, and the third record of a scorpion of the genus Teuthraustes to be recorded from Brazilian Amazonia. The total number of species of Teuthraustes is now raised to 21. The patterns of distribution of the genus are commented upon, and its geographical distribution is also enlarged.
